Friday Night Previews: Week 1

It was an interesting and entertaining first week of games for the Dogwood's Circle seven teams. Some surprised in a good way (Palestine) and a not so good way (Frankston, Cayuga), while others lived up to their expectations.

After last week's picks, I'm 4-3, hoping to do a little bit better this week. The matchups for Week 1 are very interesting across the board, and could provide some really big wins or losses for the home teams.

Pittsburg (1-0) at PALESTINE (1-0)
It wasn't that the Wildcats won last week that was the surprise, it was the way they did it. Palestine did basically whatever it wanted against Brownsboro en route to a 54-6 victory, a win that surely lifted up the team's confidence to high levels. This week's game will bring a tougher challenge, as Pittsburg also won with ease during Zero Week, 42-0 over Jefferson. Many around East Texas have taken notice of this game, and a win tonight surely legitimizes the Wildcats as a real threat in the area.
My Pick: Palestine 41, Pittsburg 37

WESTWOOD (0-1) at FRANKSTON (0-1)
The area's first local-versus-local matchup of the year should also be one of 2011's most entertaining games. Both Westwood and Frankston are loaded with talent at the skill positions, and neither showed much of a defensive presence in their Zero Week losses. The scoreboard might break tonight in Frankston, but I think Treston Coleman makes the difference for the Indians.
My Pick: Frankston 56, Westwood 45

Normangee (0-1) at ELKHART (1-0)
Without a doubt, the Elkhart offense is licking its chops at the idea of Normangee coming to Elk Field. A week after rushing for more than 350 yards in their 38-6 win over Leon, the Elks now get to face a Normangee squad that gave up almost 200 yards to Trinity in its own Zero Week loss (24-0). Led by sophomore standout Jeffrey Wilson, this one could be over really quick.
My Pick: Elkhart 48, Normangee 6

CAYUGA (0-1) at Mt. Enterprise (1-0)
After their first non-district loss since their season-opener in 2009, the Cayuga football team is back trying to find itself and trying to get in the win column. It won't be easy on the road in Mt. Enterprise, a team that made it to the final eight in the smaller division of Class 1A in 2010. That being sad, Cayuga may have more beat themselves in Zero Week than did Overton.
My Pick: Cayuga 20, Mt. Enterprise 14

Trinity (1-0) at GRAPELAND (0-1)
Everything that applied in the Elkhart/Normangee preview applies to this one as well, except it doesn't favor the local team. Trinity ran for around 200 yards in their Zero Week win over Normangee, and Centerville did anything it wanted offensively against Grapeland in their 55-20 victory to open the year. It doesn't bode well for the Sandies.
My Pick: Trinity 30, Grapeland 13

OAKWOOD (1-0) at Fruitvale (0-0)
Junior who? Okay so let's not anoint him the next Junior Edwards yet, but after his big game against Watauga Christian, Bryson Randle looks to be handling the duties okay. Add in a diversified attack with Jerome Dawson (six carries for 70 yards and two scores), and Oakwood is dangerous once again. This game is one that the Panthers won handily in 2010, and while it might be closer, it's still a win.
My Pick: Oakwood 53, Fruitvale 34

There you have it, my Week 1 picks. Who do you have winning this week?
