Halftime in 20-3A Baseball

Thanks to the massive rain that blanket most of the state of Texas east of Interstate 35 Tuesday, the majority of 20-3A's baseball teams wrapped up the first half of district play Wednesday.

After those five games, here's where things stand (via the awesome 3Abaseball.com):

Madisonville (5-0)
Fairfield (4-1)
Groesbeck (3-2)
Palestine (2-3)
Westwood (1-4)
Mexia (0-5)

Nothing real surprising there, although there is really nice symmetry all the way down the standings.

Palestine lost to Groesbeck last night, 4-3. That means all three of the Wildcat losses have come in really heartbreaking fashion.

They lost to Fairfield 8-6, loading the bases with no one out in the bottom of the seventh before seeing their Nos. 2, 3 & 4 hitters strike out to end the game.

Palestine then lost to Madisonville, 8-4. Now, that doesn't seem real heartbreaker—and it is the least so—but Palestine gave up only one hit in the whole game, but walked 15 Mustangs and committed four errors.

Then the Wildcats lose to Groesbeck by one run. Don't know all the details, but one run is one run.

After a breakthrough season last year that saw them almost make the playoffs, Palestine had high hopes coming into 2012. Those hopes included making the playoffs. They've got work to do to do that.

The Wildcats have to beat both Mexia and Westwood like they should, and also beat Groesbeck in the season finale just to have a chance. An upset against one of the top-two wouldn't hurt either, but Palestine plays both of those games on the road this time around.

Speaking of the Panthers, first-year head coach J.D. Cashion has made big improvements to that club in 2012. They won't make the playoffs this year, but he's got a young squad that is continually getting better. Definitely something to build on.
