Earlier in the week, we talked here on the blog about the possibility of Jim Thome bringing his talents to North Texas. My buddy Kyle and I even talked about the move on the newest installment of the View From the Cheap Seats podcast.
But according to ESPN, Thome's talents are staying far, far north. The question is now, what are the Rangers' plans? One apparent possibility is that Manny Ramirez could bring his show to Arlington. The Rangers are apparently interested in the slugger along with a slew of other squads.
So, that's one possibility. Another is that the Rangers could just play the season with they had they already have, which would include "Mr. Texas Ranger"—as Kyle calls him in the podcast—Michael Young doing most of the DH work for Texas in 2011.
Personally, I'm in favor of just playing with Young. I really don't want to hurt the man's psyche anymore than it's already been hurt by not giving him all the at-bats we promised him when we decided to make this move.
That being said, I'm starting to get the feeling that this won't be the case. When news came out about the Rangers interest in Manny hours after the Thome signing, it made me think the Rangers don't feel like Young is the answer at DH. That means he'll have to take more 1B reps, or that he's possibly gone all together. With how Mitch Moreland performed late in the year and especially during the playoffs, I'd lean toward the latter if I was forced to choose.
Michael Young has been my favorite Ranger for almost a decade, and I'd hate to see him go, especially when I feel like he can still help the squad.
What do you think? How should Texas proceed at the DH position?
